Chapter 16

I hurried home, my head whirling with thoughts of the steaming liquid from the Bleeding Pool, the vacant expressions of those at Solace, and my latest run-in with Jericho. As I made it to the front door, I rested a hand on the smooth mahogany and took a deep breath before going inside.

“Hey.” Elayna greeted me as soon as I entered, her relief evident in that single word. “Everything okay?”

“Of course.” I wasn’t quite ready to talk about Jericho yet, especially not with Elayna.

She must’ve read the hesitation in my eyes, because a little furrow appeared on her brow.

Before she could ask, I said, “You about ready to go to the Crystal Caves?”

For a moment, she looked like she was really considering going now, even though I hadn’t meant it that way. We still had a while before the waxing spell ended and it would be safe-ish to go out. Normally, Elayna would never consider going through the field with all the soul-eaters active. She must be super worried about her time.

“We’ll wait for the waning spell,” she finally said. A hopeful nervousness entered her expression. “But this could be it.”

I took her hand, trying to weave confidence into my voice. “We’ll get your last memory shard and get you the crystal that gets you home.”

Gold sparked from my fingers like starlight, warning me of a new memory’s arrival.
